❝ Chase your dreams ❞
2014 YEAR END.
Posted Friday, 26 December 2014 // 10:39 am

Time flies, indeed. It felt like I just turned 18 a few days ago, but the truth is in less than 2 months, I will be 19. If I could freeze time; I would, just to be 18 forever. How did time passed by so fast? Last year, 2013, we were still panicking, worrying the movie, 2014, will turn into reality. And now, the Earth will soon be ending 2014 safely and hopefully, will approach 2015 smoothly.

At the start of 2014, I thought I was going to die in Year 2 but I survived half of it! Though a few weeks ago, I was barely alive. What can I say? I chose Polytechnic and I jolly well know how things will end. Polytechnic life is never easy, yea, we do get flexible timetable and dress code etc. But the amount of projects and tutorials given to you every week is enough to suck all of your energy out of you. Not forgetting our GPA is on the line. I can proudly say I braved through all exams and tutorials and I'm finally enjoying my 3 weeks holiday. Holiday is great but holiday assignments are such pain in the arse.

Despite school being rather shitty most of the time, I still love going to school. I just love to learn. (I'm a weird kid, I know.) In the year of 2014, I have gained a lot, lost a lot as well. This year, so much has changed in my life, I have taken so many first step and there are so many things I'm grateful for.

#1 Volunteer
My New Year resolution for this year was to contribute more and give back to the society. I'm glad I joined JSCC as a Youth Volunteer and be a part of V2. Within the first few months of volunteering with them, so many names were thrown at me, I can hardly remember any of them...... With them, I stepped into Willing Hearts for the first time, deliver food to elderlies, brought them out to play, clean houses, interacted with APSN children and organised events as a team. With them, I've seen so much, heard so much and felt so much. The best feeling was given by the smiles on their faces. It made me realise how fortunate I am and how much I can do to make a huge difference. To wake up at 5am, it will be worth it too.

#2 Organise a public event
Hair for Hope Satellite Event happened on 14th June 2014 @ JSCC. We garnered a lot of $33,326.18 for Children's Cancer Foundation and I can say I am very proud of it. Click here for more information. It wasn't easy, but with a little help from my friends, brother and personnels, it happened. I'm not sure which is harder, finding a sponsor or the finalisation of the poster. Both did almost drive me crazy. It took me quite awhile to decide to hold this event and I'm glad I did. I have gained a great amount of experiences and met many people that appreciate this event. Thank you QB, Elvis Ng, Dennis Ong, Cherry Phyo, my elder brother and all volunteers that helped and participated.

#3 Christmas Project 2014
A 5 days self initiated project that just ended successfully yesterday. I am pretty proud of it, given the fact that the number of smiles my team and I have received is countless. We shall see if it will happen again next year, with more manpower and more cash. Read more here.

#4 Sponsor a kid
Not sure how much you guys know about World Vision. Basically, they are a global partnership and their vision is "For every child, life in all its fullness; Our prayer for every heart, the will to make it so. " I'm currently sponsoring a little girl in India, S$45 a month and she is one of my biggest joys in 2014. Receiving just a letter from her can make my day a lot better. Knowing I have changed someone's life for the better and they appreciate it is the best feeling ever. $45 a month, I'm willing to work that extra shift, teach an additional tuition and shop lesser just to have more for her. I always believe in sharing and offering what you have in hand.

#5 7 cups of tea
Refer to previous post if needed.

#6 Applied Psychology (AP)
I have always wanted to take up psychology but the main reason why I didn't is because my parents think it is not practical in Singapore and I hate to disappoint them. Not that I totally hate Hotel and Leisure facilities Mgmt, I just have always loved psychology. Being able to take up Applied Psychology as Diploma Plus is the best Singapore Polytechnic has ever given me. Those extra hours at night every week is worth it, though it can be really exhausting sometimes. The people I have met, the things I have leant and the fun I had compensated everything that sucked. (Well, now I have a 10 pages report to write...)

#7 Macbook Air
This is a ridiculous point but I'm glad I got it. I have used Lenovo for about 3 years now and felt it's time. I'm so lazy sometimes even I can't deal with myself. I need something lighter with a longer battery life and Macbook Air qualifies. I am quite in love with it now but my Lenovo is not forgotten. School still requires Windows every now and then.

#8 People I met
2014, a year, 365 days, so many people came and went. Some stayed though. From those that stayed, I learnt a lot from them, they have taught me so much about this world I was once to naive to see. I learnt how nice someone can be and how heartless one can be. This is one thing I will always learn and forget. Next year, I will learn it again. Trust and watch them take it and shred it into pieces.

#9 Grateful
I'm grateful for being alive, being healthy (not 100% but good enough), having a job, nice friends and colleagues, a rather good GPA and having the motivation to jog monthly and exercise daily. Ohh! I'm definitely grateful for all the good food I have eaten. And all those guys that always send me home after a date despite the fact that you guys live at the opposite end of where I live. Weird thing but yea, sadly all those guys I have dated, lives miles away from me.

#10 Longboarding
I have always wanted to do skateboarding but it seems like in everyone's opinion, it was too dangerous so I took up rollerblading instead few years ago. This year, I met a bunch of colleagues that cruise and when I decided to do what I have always wanted, they helped me through it- choosing a board, balancing, curving and cruising to places I have never been. It's like a dream come true. (Looking for skaters to do some cruising!)

The the end, we only regret the chances we didn’t take, relationships we were afraid to have and the decisions we waited too long to make.” I wish I could say this quote is true but it's a big lie. So many times I regret the chances I took and the decision I made too hastily.

#1 Peer pressure
I'm not much of someone that submits to peer pressure but sometimes friends hit my soft spot too easily. I hate it and I'm still working on it. I may never like it anyway, but for my friend I'm willing to give it a chance. Sorry if I decide some things aren't for me, I'm just not cut for it.

#2 Impulsiveness
Girls. We all buy stuff and regret later. No explanation needed.

#3 People I met
Yes, they are the ones I'm grateful for but at the same time, they are the people I regret spending time trying to know them. Not exactly the same people but they all fall into the same category, " People I met". How do I put it? You meet someone, you thought he/she is different, worth the time (all the positive stuff) etc then they keep doing things to prove you wrong.

#4 Time wasted
All the time I wasted on procrastinating, napping, staring into space, overthinking... (The list goes on.)

There are not a lot of things I regret but that's more or less all of it. I would say my 2014 New Year Resolution is quite accomplished and I'm proud of myself. Thank you 2014 for all the life lessons learnt. I didn't mention anything I've learnt in class because I could care less about it. When I graduate, whatever that's left in my brain will be just 40% and they are not a priority to my brain. (Except for things I've learnt in AP)

A minute of silence to those that have lost their lives tragically and peacefully in 2014, all of you are in a better place now and do know we miss you.

Hope everyone had a great 2014 and I wish all of you have a blessed 2015.

ONE NIGHT STAND.
Posted Monday, 22 December 2014 // 6:31 pm
Something inspired by a cover José Gonzalez sang, Heartbeat by The Knife. I do love both Filous & Mount Remix and the original one but I think I prefer the original more which is more acoustic. (Still working on my psychology report, just need to escape for awhile.)

Loud music in a crowded bar, I see no one but you.
Pretty faces and unknown names, we were attracted.
Our minds swirled- couldn't walk straight and couldn't think straight.
Thought we were fine, thought we were perfect.
Hungry for your scent, hungry for your love.
So in love, promises were made to stay forever.
Two different heartbeats, raced to the climax and slowed to match one another's.
Mind let loose, words spoken but what is truth and what is under influence?

One perfect night, blurred by too many drinks.
One sweet love, formed unintentionally.
Was it a mistake, I'm confused.
We were in love and now I'm still in love.

Two strangers whose paths crossed.
One sweet love in one perfect night, two became one.
Sweet dreams in the night but heated argument in daylight.
No longer one but back to two.
Two strangers, pretty faces and names still unknown.
We were in love. We were in love.

CHRISTMAS PROJECT 2014
Posted Friday, 19 December 2014 // 10:40 pm

Christmas
ˈkrɪsməs/

noun
The annual Christian festival celebrating Christ's birth, held on 25 December in the Western Church.

I'm neither a Christian nor a believer of any religion. Truth to be told, I'm an atheist but I do respect all religions out there. I respect their beliefs and their origins. In that one sentence, Google has summarised the meaning of Christmas though some argued that Jesus was not born on 25 December but somewhere in September. I thought so too but if you want a more detailed explanation, it's here and here.

Christmas got to be my favourite festival/celebration. I love it better than my birthday. First of all, presents and cards! Secondly, there are A LOT more pretty snow globes available in stores. Thirdly, I prefer rain to sunshine, so "Yay!" to monsoon seasons. But I'm glad we have it moderately in Singapore unlike Philippines and Vietnam. Lastly, I've always loved watching the snow fall and starlights! During Christmas, the decorations around are so mesmerising.

I believe, Christmas is the season of giving and sharing the joy. Since young, I always look forward to Christmas. Every Christmas, my parents will bring us to the mall and give us a budget of $50-$100 to buy whatever we like. When you're only 5, just a $10 bill is a real big deal already, having $50 is just way too awesome. My mum did buy me one huge soft toy from Takashimaya every Christmas but I slowly grew tired of it when my bed ran out of space for me to sleep in. As we grow older, the tradition slowly died down and I started receiving presents from friends. The excitement and joy I get every time I receive a wrapped present, dying to know what's inside and rip it open anxiously is what I always love about Christmas.

You ask, "Isn't it the same on birthdays?" To be honest, I'm the kind of person that sucks with dates, so chances are, I would not remember your birthday and I rather people don't remember my birthday so I'll feel less guilty and more equal. (laughs) I'm trying to remember birthdays of special people with the help of my phone now, don't be mean to be okay? Christmas is a good time to make up for birthday present you forgot. I hate to admit it but I do it all the time. (shrugs) Everyone loves receiving things in boxes or wrapped, it makes them happy. Just like how sometimes when the delivery comes, though you already know what's in that parcel (cause you bought it yourself online) but you still open it excitedly. So, just buy your loved ones something.

Sharing the joy, Christmas is about spending time with your family or with someone you love, eating a feast, gather around for gift exchange and sing Christmas carol. Everyone is happy. Everyone should be happy! But what about those alone overseas studying, working or whatsoever reason they are not feeling the joy? This year, to finish off my 2014 New Year Resolution, I have decided on a Christmas project- sharing my fortune and bringing joy to people's life. I have gathered a few of my big-hearted and loving friends to help me give out chocolates to strangers/foreign workers/elderlies, it could generally be anyone.

Today, 19 December is the start of the Christmas Project 2014. We have started out somewhere nearer to us, at Westmall. Singaporeans are a little weird, some would actually reject these goodies, but overall it was a great experience! An handicap played and sang some Christmas songs to help us brighten up the streets and bring out the Christmas spirits. It was a pretty quick and meaningful event, took about 30-40mins for the goodies to be cleared up. Seeing their faces brighten after a long day at work makes me happy as well. Thank you Sijie, Dylan, Jolene, Raphael, Cheehow, Junjie, Justin, Roger and Dina!

The rest of the dates and venues are stated below! Hang around and you might get something from us. (winks). All freebies are while stock last, and this is a self-initiated project; no sponsors or profit gained.

Since it's Christmas season, I added a little snow in here, my favourite Christmas song (Baby, it's cold outside) and movie (The Elf 2003). Side note, I can't decide if I want to go to Michael Buble's concert next year.

Hope you guys like it! Have jolly Christmas!

TERRARIUM
Posted Monday, 15 December 2014 // 10:29 pm

I have typed out a few posts, just waiting for the time to come. While waiting, I shall write a little. Recently, I'm pretty obsessed with terrarium. I'm always addicted to weird stuff..... Jigsaw puzzles, snow globes, liquorice etc.

" Terrarium is a type of miniature ecosystem of plants. They are usually sealable glass containers that can be opened for maintenance and to access the plants inside." - Wiki

A terrarium cost about $30 to a few hundreds, depending on size, types of plants and it's decoration. I bought one at Gardens by the Bay, it was okay but when I found out you can actually make your own terrarium, I was very determined to try it.

Things you need:
Jars or any glass container
Soil
Fertiliser (Optional)
Plants
Mesh
Pebbles

I bought my jars from Typo (6 for $25), Soil, Fertiliser and Plants from Giant ($2.69, $1.20 and $4.99) and the mesh and pebbles from Daiso. I couldn't find the exact mesh required so, just used whatever that was available. Each terrarium cost only $6.30 and you'll have plenty of soil and fertiliser left. Completely sealed jars or jars with holes are fine, just take note that for completely sealed jars, use charcoal soil. Charcoal helps to absorb any nasty soil.

I promise you it is going to be real easy! There's only 7 steps.

Step 1: Lay the bottom of your jars with pebbles.
Step 2: Cut the mesh into the size of your jar and let it sit above the pebbles. This is to prevent too much soil from mixing with the pebbles. Pebbles are meant for decoration, if it's covered by soil, then the purpose of pebbles is defeated.

My mesh was too thick so I peeled it into two. You can tell the above mesh is thinner. After you lined the mesh above the pebbles, you'll get something like this.

Step 3: Add in the soil till about 3/4 full and add a thin layer of fertiliser on top of it. I used organic chicken fertiliser so it did smelled a little but I was okay with it. They do have instructions on the package but I eyeballed it. You can use a spoon or shovel to scoop the soil in but I was too lazy to find any so I just pour it in, it works as well. Just lay a plastic bag or newspaper on the floor, makes cleaning easier.
Step 4: Remove the plant and the soil from the pot and divide it into equal sections. I divided mine into 7 parts. There's 7 plants in the pot and I had 8 jars......
Step 5: Dig a hole in the jars and put the plant into the hole and put more soil around the plant.
Step 6: Press it down, make sure it is compact and water.

Step 7: Tag it! And you're ready to give it to anyone you think that would love plants! I got mine at Popular for $2.70.

I think it's a very pretty and inexpensive gift that suits everyone of all ages and gender. I didn't really do a good job but I'm sure you guys can do it a lot better than I did!

Have fun!

HOW TO EAT A LOT AND STAY FIT?
Posted Saturday, 6 December 2014 // 11:39 am

Morning world! Didn't plan to do this on a Saturday morning but it drizzled unexpected so I'm just waiting for the rain to stop before I can go out and jog. I can't really study now because once I study I have to sit there for at least 2 hours. And partly because I've already planned my day, changing it drastically will make me very unhappy. I figured slotting in a post while waiting is better than hanging around Youtube which I already did before I decided to get out of bed.

As the title says, "how to eat a lot and stay fit?" instead of "how to eat a lot and be skinny?" don't picture the end product to be a perfect barbie figure. Girls love to eat and want to be skinny at the same time but I feel that skinny is not a thing for everyone. It is more important to be fit than to be skinny. Different height requires different weight. Which means my 48kg weight might not suit you if you're 1.6m and up. A 55kg can still be crazily gorgeous.

I'm neither a health professional nor a nutritionist but I can tell you how to eat a lot and stay fit healthily. This requires a little bit of determination and effort. (what doesn't?) You want something? Work for it. Let's just get straight into it! I only have 4 tips and that's pretty much what I do.

#1 Drink lots of water
Teenagers nowadays do not have the habit of drinking water and they are missing out such a big part in life. And water, I mean plain water, not sugary drinks. The list of benefits of drinking plain water goes on and on, it helps to keep you hydrated, gives you a glowing skin etc. But what I really want to point out is that it helps increase your metabolism rate. It aids in digesting fats as well so drink on! I drink about 600ml of water every morning and about a litre more throughout the day, not really the ideal amount, we should drink at least 2 litres per day but I'm working on it.

#2 Eat healthy
If you want to eat a lot, you need to see what you're feeding your body. There is a difference between eating 3 bags of chips and eating 3 fruits within a 12hours. The fact that you're eating a lot, you need to decide carefully what to eat and what not to eat. Not that you should totally avoid junk food, but keep it in moderation. Always opt for healthier choices, more vegetables and less meat, fruits for dessert instead of fattening cake and nuts instead of chips. I know we all fancy different food but you can work around it, a healthy diet can be adopted, at the beginning it might be tough but with determination, it will soon come naturally. I'm generally a healthier person- vegetables, nuts, caffeine free tea etc but I do eat fatty meats, drink coffee and eat some fried unhealthy food when I have cravings. If I had unhealthy lunch, dinner must be healthy. Keep the cravings for tomorrow. Determination.

#3 Exercise
I'm sure you have heard this word all the time and how it's linked to being healthy. Well, can't be helped, it is the way it is. You need to work to get what you want. But if you have follow the above steps strictly, this actually only require little effort. Jog once a month and short daily exercise will do wonders. If you prefer sprints then do sprints but I generally feel that distance is always better than speed. Short daily exercise can be as easy as just squats and bicycles. I'm a weird girl that loves to walk when I'm not carrying heavy stuff, and I walk a lot. Take the stairs and walk that extra mile, you'll see the difference in the long run. (window shopping is a good exercise too!) I jog once a month but tends to jog more during stress period.

#4 Sleep
Sleep is so underrated and it's so sad. The lack of sleep can affect your metabolism drastically in terms of digesting and hormones, it's so complex I don't think you guys want to read all of it but all in all, lack of sleep will cause you to gain weight. Why? Look it up here. On average, we need 7 hours of sleep every night and I know being a teenager in Singapore (actually, anywhere in the world, not just Sg) it's almost impossible to achieve a 7hours sleep but it is not totally impossible. I tend to sleep before 12am and wake up around 8am, once in awhile because of work, project deadlines and commitments I'll stay up to 3am but that's seldom. Sleeping before 12am can be done if you do scheduling and planning. Most importantly, don't take up stuff you are not sure if you can cope, you'll only end up having everything fall on you while trying to juggle 10 tasks with just 2 hands.

That's all I have for you guys but......all these come with a price to pay. Because now you have high metabolism rate, you'll constantly get hungry and once you eat, you get high very quickly. I personally have to eat every 4 hours, cause I get hungry very quickly. And obviously whatever goes in have to go out. But it's all worth it, you get to eat whatever you want! I always satisfy my food cravings, I do not care. I want pizza; I'll go the extra miles for it. Just don't eat it an hour to two before you sleep. If you're really hungry before bed, eat fruits.

This is not a hack in life, it's just compromising with life.

And you will have no regrets.

Joyce.

I'm a walking sunshine and I blog about everything and anything under the Sun. And, I might have a slight obsession with Jigsaw puzzles, Snow globes and Stars.
